Campbell, Alexander

Campbell, Alexander
(1788–1866)
   Sect Founder.
Campbell was the son of a Presbyterian minister and was educated at the University of Glasgow in Scotland. In 1809 he emigrated to Pennsylvania and there he was ordained into the Baptist ministry. However, in 1827 he left the Baptist Church and he founded the Disciples of Christ, who were also known as the Campbellites. Campbell’s teaching emphasised baptism and the confession of Jesus Christ as saviour as the only necessary requirements of Christianity. He rejected both speculative theology and religious emotionalism and he was convinced that a union effected between the Churches based solely on the teachings of the New Testament would lead to an era of blessing. He was the author of numerous books and was the founder of Bethany College, West Virginia, which was created for the education of clergy.
